Where did you get your idea for The Memory Painter?
The original spark of the idea for The Memory Painter struck me like a lightening bolt one day as I was walking down the hallway of my apartment in 1999. My original thought was: “what if neuroscientists created a wonder drug where we could remember all our past lives?” And then the idea grew from there. Over the course of 1999 to 2000, I originally wrote the story as a feature screenplay, a 115-page thriller that focused on the present-day storyline with Michael and Linz and the 1980’s neuroscientists. Ten years later the story had been percolating in my head long enough that I wanted to see what would happen when I expanded it into a novel. There was a lot a discovery at the keyboard and The Memory Painter grew into something bigger in scope.
Will there be a sequel?
I think so! Though I’m imagining the sequel to be more of a standalone companion book that will pair with The Memory Painter. I have the main storyline pretty much mapped out, but it’s going to take me a while to write.
Do you believe in reincarnation?
The short answer – yes, in some form. I do think the soul goes on after this life.
What are you writing now?
My second novel, The Fortune Teller, will be coming out June 6, 2017 again with Picador. The story is a thriller and love story and also travels through history but in a much different way. I’m calling it a tarot thriller, because it centers around an ancient tarot deck and a prophecy written by a seer from the time of Cleopatra. I’m very excited to share it.
